George Herbert (Part 1)

George Herbert

George Herbert is one of the famous poet who belongs to the school of Metaphysics. He was a friend of John Donne. Herbert was born in 1593. He was appointed as a public orator but his ambition is to become a courtier. Later in his carrier his friends persuaded him to become a catholic priest.

It was against his will and it caused much tension and trauma in Herbert. These are reflected in his poems. He was a very dedicated and human representative in his church. The church found a voice of its own speciality in the first volume of poetry such as “The Temple, Scared poems, The Pulley, Affliction” etc.

The main theme of his poetry is “the struggle between the ordinary lay life and life surrendered to God “. George Herbert was influenced by John Donne, but he was not restricted by Donne’s style and he developed his own style. His poems are quite musical too.   He often uses Christian imagery rather unexpected manner. In this way his poems are semi auto biological and explain the nature of God’s love as he discovers through his own experience.
